12-20-2024 COCHISE GROUNDWATER STEWARDS: REACTION TO ADWR’S DECISION TO DESIGNATE AN AMA FOR THE WILLCOX BASIN

The Cochise Groundwater Stewards wholeheartedly welcome and support today’s historic announcement by ADWR Director, Tom Buschatzke, to designate the Willcox Groundwater Basin as a subsequent Active Management Area (AMA) as authorized under the 1980 Groundwater Management Act.

11-21-2024 WILLCOX BASIN VOTERS WERE DECEIVED ABOUT THE IMPACT OF AN AMA ON DOMESTIC WELLS

Voters were misled in 2022 by deceptive statements that made no distinction between Exempt versus Non-Exempt wells in regards to expanding water use, metering, and fees. The mailer below was delivered to all postal addresses in the basin and was paid for by RWA – the PAC that led the local opposition to the AMA.

10-23-2024 Press Release: Governor Katie Hobbs and Local Leaders Applaud ADWR Steps Toward Protecting Arizona’s Water

Phoenix, AZ —Today, Governor Katie Hobbs, local vineyard owner Mark Jorve, farmer Ed Curry, and resident Steve Kisiel issued statements in support of the Arizona Department of Water Resources announcing the Notice of Initiation of Designation Procedures for a potential Willcox Groundwater Basin AMA.

10-23-2024 Press Release regarding ADWR announcment of proposed AMA for the Willcox Basin

The Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (“Director”) hereby initiates this IN RE: SUBSEQUENT ACTIVE action pursuant to Arizona Revised Statutes (“A.R.S.”) § 45-412 to consider designating the Willcox Groundwater Basin as a subsequent active management area (“AMA”), based upon the following criteria:
1) groundwater for future needs; and
2) Active management practices are necessary to preserve the existing supply of Land subsidence or fissuring is endangering property or potential groundwater storage capacity.
